Fierce Gales Leave Numerous Homes Without Power in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Citizens encouraged to remain inside as powerful gusts lash the region.

Intense gales hitting velocities of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have caused approximately 90,000 homes lacking electricity and compelled officials to halt more than 100 aircraft departures, as reported by domestic outlets.

These gusts are influencing the whole South Island and southern parts of the northern region, according to the national weather agency.

Officials in New Zealand have issued infrequent high-level wind alerts - the highest alert level - in core zones such as these major districts.

Residents have been encouraged to stay indoors, refrain from journeys, and make arrangements for more power and communication outages.

Widespread Impact and Crisis Response

This outage appears to be affecting residences mainly in the southern region, although authorities state that power was being slowly brought back.

Local media have stated that in certain areas structures have suffered roof damage, while utility poles and vegetation have been toppled by the gusts.

Within the capital, a man was killed after being impacted by a falling limb at a popular trail walking spot on Tuesday.

Meanwhile in Wellington, a female was pushed toward oncoming traffic on a thoroughfare by a strong gust of wind, in a event that was captured in a viral dashcam video.

Flights to and from the metropolis have been cancelled due to the winds, and various routes and public facilities are also closed.

At the same time local leaders have announced a crisis declaration, to assist emergency management operations.

Strike Action Alongside Extreme Conditions

The wild winds on today coincide with many of teachers, doctors and other public workers are participating in what has been described as a "significant labor action", calling for higher wages and enhanced employment terms.

Yet the extreme weather has forced them to alter some of their plans, with several external protests shifted to interior venues or abandoned.

Similar gusts are also sweeping the neighboring country, ushering in a period of extreme heat to the remote areas.

Authorities have announced fire bans for fear of wildfires.
